Photo Diary: Sunday 17 October 2010
Salem, MA
[special thanks to Leigh of The Lovely Leigh for supplementing my sad point and shoot pics with her fancy pants photographs]

[Despite jars of guts, an indoor tree and a darling toadstool tea table, the toy store (above) was not nearly as exciting as we hoped. The Magic Parlor (below), however, was thoroughly fulfilling its creepiness quota.]

[above: Meet Romeo, the long-haired chihuahua. Juliet was having her BOO cape adjusted. We were allowed to take their pictures on the condition that we first knew their names.]

[We were excited by splashy lights and bright colours, thinking we'd found a fair. It turned out to just be extra-flashy food stands.]

[above: It just happened to be the day of the Witch Ride, an annual charity motorcycle rally from Boston to Salem. By mid-afternoon swarms of bikes had descended upon the city.]

[Leigh slyly pretended to photograph tombstones while stealing a picture of a particularly snazzy biker babe.
above: I think this is the moment she was caught.
below: The photographer stalking her prey.]

[And suddenly we spotted in the distance, rising above the gray and gloom of heavily trodden graves, the lights and colors of the carnival. We found it!
above: I love the juxtaposition of the tombstones and the ferris wheel. It seems an appropriate metaphor for the town.]

[I am slowly proving to Gregor that having his photo taken will not, in fact, turn him to stone, nor will his soul be snatched. He was particularly willing (or at least feigned patience with me) on this day.]

[on Gregor: jacket, G-Star; sweater, AllSaints; shirt, vintage; sunglasses, Oak; necklace, DIY. not pictured: jeans, Marc by Marc Jacobs; shoes, vintage from Bobby from Boston.]

[on me: cape and curved hem shirt, H&M; fringe vest and leather shorts; Forever 21; shoes, Jeffrey Campbell; hat, Club Monaco; skull and crossbones logo bag, Rugby by Ralph Lauren]

[above: This tree had a perfect little nook for perching, but it was deceptively difficult and unyielding to our efforts to climb.]

[above: My Jeffrey Campbell boots go everywhere. This is why I love wedges - I'd like to see you climb a tree in heels.]
